Anyone have an off-hand, general opinion about the value of an early Type 2 VW Bus that's probably a condition 3ish driver? I believe it's a '68 with a fixed, raised fiberglass top.

Not for me, but for a Prius-driving ex who needs help scoping it out. Here's to hoping I don't find myself obligated to go take a look at it with her.

type 2 IS a vw bus, but anyhow.

I need a picture, highroof can be a number of conversions which would affect value. Plus rust hides all over those things. Way too tough to tell. Get us a pic and we can help further.

That does look really clumsy now that I look at it, thanks for clarification. Waiting on pictures right now, I told her to assume that it's going to be rusty as hell unless proven otherwise.

That was my impression from afar on these and kind of how I qualified my response to her, especially with the highroof conversion. Awaiting details and pictures, but I'm not sure she has much to offer.

Was hoping to avoid having to get super involved on her behalf, but I'm going to feel obligated to help her do this right.

5-10k, depending on interior equipment, rust, and mechanical condition. Do your friend a favor and reality check them. It will be oily, dirty, inefficient, slow, unsafe, not at all environmentally friendly, and expensive to maintain (if not doing it yourself & avoiding the almost unavoidable crummy South American parts available), and that's if it's perfect. With that plastic roof it'll probably leak too.

The days of normal people driving aircooled VWs are pretty much gone. They are now in the realm of enthusiasts & mechanics who know & can work on them (on the side of the road if necessary), and inexplicably love them anyway, like myself. If your friend hears that and says "ok cool," by all means have at it & enjoy the experience. Most people don't because they have the romanticized idea of a VW bus in their mind and forget all the rest until it punches them in the face.

Dallas. Gave a brief look to craigslist to see if I could find it on there, but I didn't see it. I think she may have just seen it with a 'for sale' sign on it while walking around hipsterville.

Hilariously enough, this girl wears the J Mascis-style giant, goofy 80s frames with non-prescription lenses that you were ranting about just the other day. I don't miss that.

Attempting to get that across to her, but it's a slow process.

I mean that makes sense. I usually do more Type 1 stuff, but there's almost 6000 people in my ACVW club so I can share it over there when you get pictures.

'68 means it's a bay window so it shouldn't be commanding the absolutely insane prices split window busses are.

There's also a lot of fiberglass style tops so the style and even the company make a big difference:

"more than its worth" thats my official valuation of the amount of money these horrifying pieces of crap pull down. I mean, honestly, you HAVE to be stoned out of your gourd to want to ride around in or drive a vintage 'bus. I say this having once had a friend who owned one. I no longer have that friend. I mean, really, a beetle, sure! A beetle is quirky and anachronistic, but a 'bus? FUCK NO.

not bad looking. Sure looks like an Adventure Wagen to me. Maybe in that condition around 4-5 grand if it doesnt have lurking rust. They don't come up often for sale so hard to pin, but it isnt as useful as a westy. That also depends on how the interior is fitted too. If it is missing all the camper bits shoot for 3500

Thanks for the input. Apparently the seller is asking $13k. I'm in the process of trying to temper her enthusiasm, but that'll be a lot easier now that I can confirm that the price is pretty well off base.

hahahahahahaha I am choking. 13K for a bay window.........

with that orange peel on the sides it looks like it was painted with house paint!

I shot on the low side. Adventure Wagens aren't that hot, and yeah they leak. That isnt a VW color, and looks to have been a Earl Scheib/driveway paint job. 4-5, less if the camper bits are gone

Yep. I spoke before the pic, and without further info would put that at the low end of my 5-10k range. It'd have to be Westy-equivalent equipped inside & perfect otherwise to make anywhere near 10.

I think the only things in the bay world worth over 10 are nice sika and dokas. I miss my 71 doka. Rusty as all get out though...

Two words: hipster tax. And honestly, it would have probably worked had she not called me. She literally sounds like she's on the edge for forking over the cash.

You can even tell from here that the dude painted it with Rustoleum and a roller.

A customer has been searching for a good Bay Doka for like 5 years, and they're either crappy rustboxes, missing the bedsides etc or $30k.

This single has been on local CL for a while.
